Interstice: The Curious, The Cautious, The Hollow (7)

THE COMPANION Hades and Eden moved closer to the village as the sounds of life gathered around them—voices overlapping, laughter rising and falling, the dull rhythm of work carried on without pause. Hades walked as he always did, steady and unbothered. Eden followed a step behind, slower now, her attention drawn in every direction at once. The village was uneven, almost careless in its construction. Huts stood wherever space had been claimed rather than planned, their placement dictated by instinct rather than order. Small patches of land surrounded nearly every dwelling, soil turned by hand and patience, dotted with growing vegetables. Goats wandered freely between paths. Cows rested beneath makeshift shades. Sheep dozed where the sun fell warmest, tethered loosely, as if even restraint here was gentle. It was green. Alive. Peaceful in a way Eden had never known. In the Heavens, everything existed by design—perfect spacing, perfect symmetry, light untouched by shadow. Nothing here fol...

THE UNKNOWN They continued forward, the forest stretching endlessly ahead, it wasn't dark, allowing enough light to pass through—its silence heavy but not empty. The ground beneath their feet was uneven, roots twisting through the soil like veins, forcing Eden to watch every step. She kept her wings drawn close to her back, feathers brushing against each other with quiet restraint, as if afraid to make a sound. Her light dimmed instinctively, flickering at every unfamiliar noise, every whisper of movement in the shadows. This place was nothing like the Heavens. There, darkness never lingered. Silence never pressed in. The path narrowed as they walked, branches arching overhead, the air thick with a scent Eden couldn’t name. Then—almost without warning—the shadows eased. Flowers bloomed along the trail. Eden slowed, her steps coming to a gradual stop as her gaze fell upon them. They grew freely, untamed, their colors deep and grounded, untouched by perfection. Something about the...

THE DARK As they continued deeper into the forest, Eden’s wings fluttered close to her, drawing inward with every unfamiliar sound. Her light flickered faintly, responding to the strange silence that surrounded them—a silence too complete, as though the forest itself were listening. The darkness thickened with every step. Trees crowded closer, their branches weaving together overhead until little remained of the sky. What light still existed slipped through narrow gaps between leaves, thin and fragile, vanishing before it could settle. “Why are we going into the dark?” Eden asked, her voice quieter than before. Hades did not slow. “Because some paths require it,” he replied. “Passing through darkness is sometimes the only way to see what waits beyond it.” They continued along The Path. Soon, even the faint traces of light disappeared. The forest became pitch-black, the air heavy and close. Eden’s steps faltered. Her wings folded tighter against her, feathers trembling as instin...

THE PATH The silence that followed Eden’s answer felt wrong—as if the world itself had paused to listen. He did not move, eyes fixed on the sky and nestled among the treetops. He exhaled, slow and measured, as though Eden’s answer had merely confirmed something he already knew. “I figured,” he said quietly. “You could see that too.” Then the figure in the tree moved. He descended without haste. The branches did not resist him. The air shifted—subtle and obedient—parting as he passed through it. When he reached the ground, the stillness deepened, settling around him like a held breath. Without looking back, he turned and began to walk. Eden hesitated. He did not turn. He did not acknowledge her presence. His path was steady, unmarked by hesitation or intent to guide. The world reshaped itself around his movement—roots bending inward, light thinning, the space ahead growing heavier. After a moment, Eden followed. The space behind him did not close. It allowed her passage. Aft...

THE WATCHER As Eden stepped out of the Heavens, she felt nothing like the rumors she had heard about angels who left. If anything, she felt lighter than before, as though an invisible burden she had carried for far too long had quietly lifted from her shoulders. But when her feet touched the ground, the world beneath her was nothing like the Heavens. It felt heavier—rooted—while the air around her was cool, not stinging with cold, but unfamiliar enough to make her aware of every breath she took. As she moved deeper into the place known as the Outside World, a strange sensation crept over her. The hairs at the nape of her neck rose instinctively, a silent warning without a name. She couldn’t tell what had unsettled her—only that something had. She paused and looked around. There was no movement, no sound. Just a heavy stillness, pressing in from all sides. Eden walked for some time, though she couldn’t tell how long. The landscape offered no markers—no sun to measure, no path to f...

THE OUTSIDE WORLD Eden went back to other angels, wondering about the Outside World that she and other angels were forbidden to go to. She sat there with them but her imagination led her to the thoughts of the Outside world and its mysterious, strange attraction. Her friends noticed that her attention was somewhere else, but they didn't say much as they all knew about the warning that Senior angel had given her. Days went by but Eden's curiosity only grew with time. Whenever she looked at the edge of Heavens, her mind would go back to the thoughts of Outside world. She started feeling anxious and began to  overthink about why the angels were forbidden to go out while their fellow fairies can. Her mind raced with all sorts of questions but all remained unanswered. Soon her anxiety started to gnaw at her and fogged her mind with uncertainty and hesitations. Everyone around her noticed that her songs had started to sound soulless and her laughter forced and empty. Her face didn...

THE HEAVENS "She wandered about the Heavens all day, born with light, innocence and hope." She woke up to the rays of the Sun warming her skin, she stirred her wings and flutter opened her eyes. She looked like the very manifestation of purity and innocence. Though her face was soft and angelic—full of youth yet her eyes—milky and luminous—held a calm wisdom, as though they had watched centuries pass in a single glance. She looked around the serenity of the Heavens which embraced her like a shelter. She put on a smile, not because anyone expected it, just because she wanted to—always striving to appear as flawless as she felt she should—and rose to start a new day. She sang with angels and fairies, her laughter and smiling brightening up wherever she went. She was loved wherever she went, as if she were the Heaven's favorite; everyone around seemed to cherish her. Her loveable personality made it hard for others to avoid her magical charms. She spent whole day performing ...
